Basic Search

The Basic Search page allows you to perform a variety of searches. You can specify the search terms, the type of search (Keyword, Author, Title, Subject, etc.), and a single limit on the search. You can also select from the main list of limits before performing your search.

The different search types are as follows:

Title	enter as much of the title as you know do not include any initial articles such as a, an, the, das, la *do not include punctuation	grapes of wrath advances in chemistry series jayhawker
Title Keyword	use if you are unsure of the order of words in title do not include punctuation	wrath grapes
Journal Title	enter as much of the title as you know do not include initial articles such as a, an, the, das, la, etc. *do not include punctuation	journal of politics sports illustrated
Journal Title Keyword	use if you are unsure of the order of words in the journal title do not include initial articles such as a, an, the, das, la, etc. *do not include punctuation	obstetrics gynecology
Author	authors may be people, organizations, or conferences search the last name first when searching for a personal author *do not include punctuation	hemenway, robert modern language association
Keyword Anywhere	use quotation marks (") to search for a phrase use a question mark (?) to search for different endings of a term use + to mark essential terms use * to mark important terms use ? to truncate	"civil war" and south? +explorer *internet comput?
Subject Heading	*subject heading searches use the Library of Congress or National Library of Medicine's terminology - ask a librarian if you are having trouble	economics kansas history 1854-1861 teenagers employment
Call Number	enter as much of the call number as you know you may search any type of call number: Dewey Decimal, Library of Congress, SuDoc, etc.	PS 129 .A55 823.08 HE 20.6502:AC 9
Author/ Title	enter a personal name (last name plus as much as you know of the first name), or the name of an institution, or the name of an association or organization, or the name of a conference or meeting. omit all punctuation *search limits do NOT apply in Author searches	twain, mark einstein al (will retrieve Al, Albert, etc.) modern language association kansas conference on land use
Boolean	use AND, OR, NOT to combine search terms use opening and closing parentheses to group search terms *use? to truncate	laser and outpatient "civil war" and (south? or confederate) females or women or girls

To perform a search, you must do the following:

Enter the words you want to find in the Find This: field.
Select the type of search that you want to perform by choosing a search type from the Find Results In: list.
Click the Search button to execute the search. You may also click the Reset button to clear the information entered into the page.

Optional: To place limits on your search, you may either 1) select a limit from the Quick Limit: menu or, 2) click the Limits button and choose from the entire list of limits.
