Basic Search

The Basic Search page allows you to perform a variety of searches. You can specify the search terms, the type of search (Keyword, Author, Title, Subject, etc.), and a single limit on the search. You can also select from the main list of limits before performing your search.

 The different search types are as follows:

*authors may be people, organizations, or conferences

*search the last name first when searching for a personal author

*use quotation marks (") to search for a phrase

*use a question mark (?) to search for different endings of a term

use + to mark essential terms

use * to mark important terms

use ? to truncate

*subject heading searches use the Library of Congress or National Library of Medicine's terminology - ask a librarian if you are having trouble

*enter as much of the call number as you know

Title

*enter a personal name (last name plus as much as you know of the first name), or the name of an institution, or the name of an association or organization, or the name of a conference or meeting.

*omit all punctuation

To perform a search, you must do the following:

  1. Enter the words you want to find in the Find This: field.
  2. Select the type of search that you want to perform by choosing a search type from the Find Results In: list.
  3. Click the Search button to execute the search. You may also click the Reset button to clear the information entered into the page.
Optional: To place limits on your search, you may either 1) select a limit from the Quick Limit: menu or, 2) click the Limits button and choose from the entire list of limits.
